The San Diego Chargers can link their lineage to August 1959.It was the time when Barron Hilton met with representatives of five other cities to negotiate a proposed football league that later on was called the American Football League (AFL). The initial AFL started in 1960 including eight teams and those eight teams were Hilton�s Los Angeles Chargers, the Denver Broncos, Dallas Texans, Oakland Raiders, New York Titans, Houston Oilers, Buffalo Bills and the Boston Patriots. But in 1961 after moving to San Diego, the Chargers kept on playing for nine more years in the AFL. As a whole the Bolts arrived at the AFL playoffs five times and the AFL Championship four times. They were the winners of AFL Championship in 1963 where they beat the Boston Patriots 51-10 before 30,127 fans at Balboa Stadium. Before the season of 1970 the AFL fused with the National Football League (NFL). Since then till 34 years, the Chargers went on seven trips to the playoffs and gave three appearances in the AFC Championship game. Towards the end of the 1994 season, the Chargers played against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XXIX and fell 49-26.
The team�s overall record is 314-347-11 (.467). The Chargers proudly present five players and one coach highly ranked in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio: wide receiver Lance Alworth (1962-1970), quarterback Dan Fouts (1973-1987), head coach/general manager Sid Gillman (1960-69, 1971), wide receiver Charlie Joiner (1976-1986), offensive lineman Ron Mix (1960-69) and tight end Kellen Winslow (1979-1987). At the moment they are members of the Western Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). Initially they were known as the Los Angeles Chargers.
The club started its play in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League. It spent the first season in Los Angeles earlier than moving to San Diego. In 1963 the Chargers stood victorious of the AFL title before they joined the NFL as part of the AFL-NFL Merger. Beside the color differences, the Chargers have actually used the logo of an arc-shaped lightning bolt since 1960 when they were debuted. Throughout its period in the AFL, the club also wore a shield logo having a horse head, a lightning bolt, and the word "Chargers". Between the periods of 1960 to 1973, the design of team's uniform based on either Electric blue (sky blue) or white jerseys, both including gold lightning bolts on the shoulders. Though both the helmets were white and had the arc-shaped lightning bolt logo, in gold, and the players' number. In the beginning the team dressed in white pants before switching to gold in 1966. The sky blue was replaced by the dark royal blue in 1974. Player�s number from the helmet was removed and helmets were changed to dark blue. The Chargers begin using navy blue and wore white pants in 1985. The team's present uniform design debuted in 1988. It consists on an even darker shade of navy blue. The lightning bolts on the jerseys and helmets are now white with gold trim.
The team begun to wear navy pants along with their white jerseys in 1990. But since 2002, the Chargers are using the early-1960s uniform design as alternate jerseys that maybe most of the footballs fans (both of the Chargers and of other teams too) desire to bring back full-time. Though it seems like there are no plans to bring these uniforms back full-time.
