About Green Bay Packers
Founding
Curly Lambeau and Green Bay Press-Gazette sports editor George Whitney Calhoun founded the Green Bay Packers on August 11, 1919. On the request of Lambeau, the Indian Packing Company provided $500 for uniforms and equipment, on the condition that the team be named for its sponsor.
The Green Bay Packers are a professional American football team based in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Currently, they are currently members of the North Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL).The Packers are the last remaining example of the "small town teams" that comprised a majority of the NFL during the 1920s. The Green Bay Packers were the first NFL team with their own public Hall of Fame.
Being the home of a North American major professional sports league team, Green Bay is by far the smallest media market. Former high school football rivals Curly Lambeau and George Whitney Calhoun founded the team in 1919 as a new version of the semi-pro town teams that had been playing in Green Bay since 1896. Later on, the Packers turned professional and were successful in joining the League in 1921.
Championships
12 league championships are to the credit of the Packers which are more than any other American professional football team. This includes three Super Bowls. The Packers have the distinction of being the only team to win three straight NFL titles. They did it twicely in 1929-1931 and 1965-67.
Lombardi era
The Packers of the 1960s have the honor of being one of the most dominant NFL teams of all time. The team saw great improvement under Coach Vince Lombardi who took over a last-place team and built it into a juggernaut, winning five league championships over a seven-year span culminating with victories in the first two Super Bowls. The Packers had a group of legendary stars during the Lombardi era. The offense was led by quarterback Bart Starr, Jim Taylor, Carroll Dale, Paul Hornung and Jerry Kramer; the defense was led by the likes of Henry Jordan, Willie Wood, Ray Nitschke, Dave Robinson, and Herb Adderley.
In recognition of Vince Lombardi and his team's accomplishments, the Super Bowl trophy was renamed the Vince Lombardi Trophy after his death in 1970.
A new golden era
Throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and early 1990s, the Packers' poor performance led to a shakeup in which new General Manager Ron Wolf was hired. During the 1991 season, Ron Wold took over full control of the team's football operations. San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Holmgren was hired as the Packers' new head coach by Wolf in 1992.
Wolf soon acquired quarterback Brett Favre from the Atlanta Falcons for a first-round pick. Favre was successful in getting the Packers' their first win of the 1992 season. He led the Packers to a comeback win over the Cincinnati Bengals. The following week, Favre started with a win against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He has the honor of starting more than 253 consecutive games (including playoffs), which is an NFL record for a quarterback.
Beginning with the 1992 season, the Packers had 13 non-losing seasons in a row (their worst record being 8-8 in 1999), two Super Bowl appearances, and one Super Bowl win (Super Bowl XXXI). The Packers 13 consecutive non-losing seasons was an active NFL record until the team finally suffered a losing campaign in their 2005 season.
Public Company:
The Packers are now the only publicly owned company with a board of directors in American professional sports. The Packers in NFL owners meetings are represented by the team's elected president unless someone else is designated. During his time as coach, Vince Lombardi generally represented the team at league meetings in his role as general manager, except at owners-only meetings.
Today "Green Bay Packers" is the oldest team name still in use in the NFL.
