About Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens are a professional American football team based in Baltimore, Maryland. They have the honor of competing in the Northern Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). One Super Bowl title, Super Bowl XXXV was won by the Ravens in the 2000 season against the New York Giants.

Franchise history:
Keeping in view of the inadequacy of Cleveland Stadium and the lack of a sufficient replacement along with his heavy debt, then-Cleveland Browns owner Art Modell announced his intention to move the team to Baltimore on November 6, 1995. A flurry of legal activity was triggered by the decision that ended when representatives of Cleveland and the NFL reached a settlement on February 8, 1996.

Focus groups, a telephone survey, and a fan contest were all held for selecting a new name for Modell's relocated club. Finally, the name Ravens was picked as result of a fan contest drawing 33,288 voters. This name alludes to the famous poem, "The Raven", by Edgar Allan Poe, who spent the latter part of his life in Baltimore, and is also buried there. After three consecutive losing seasons, Marchibroda was succeeded by Brian Billick in 1999. Brian had served as the offensive coordinator for the record setting offense of the Minnesota Vikings the season before. As Quarterback Tony Banks came to Baltimore from the St. Louis Rams, there was marked improvement during the 1999 season. Tony had the best season of his career with 17 touchdown passes and an 81.2 pass rating. Receiver Qadry Ismail joined him and posted a 1,000-yard season. Struggled early starting 3-6 but the Ravens managed to finish with an 8-8 record..
